Screaming into the Void (Together): How the Discord Bumpiverse Community Reconfigures Perinatal Support by Navigating Shared Experience Across Borders

This paper will be published in the 2026 Journal of Undergraduate Research in Anthropology.

This ethnography presents a digital ethnography of the “Bumpiverse,” a transnational network of Discord-based perinatal support communities. Drawing on participant observation and interviews, the study examines how temporality, in particular synchronized gestational timelines and real-time availability, helps structure experiences of care, reassurance, and emotional regulation. While existing research highlights the role of online peer support in mitigating perinatal stress, this ethnography shows how Discord’s synchronous, cohort-based design produces a distinctive form of “always on” care that differs from both asynchronous forums and formal medical systems. Through practices such as “void screaming,” shared milestone progression, and specialized support channels, participants collectively manage anxiety, uncertainty, and isolation across time zones. The findings demonstrate how temporal alignment intensifies emotional resonance and mutual responsiveness, offering insight into how digital platforms can reshape care during pregnancy and early parenthood.
